Dr. Adi E Mehta is a graduate of University of Western Ontario and completed his Endocrinology fellowship at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. After working at University of Manitoba in Winnipeg as an Assistant and subsequently Associate Professor, he moved to the USA and joined the faculty at the Cleveland Clinic in the Department of Endocrinology. He is a member of numerous societies in both the USA and Canada and is listed in "Best Doctors in America: 2003-2004 and 2005-2006. He was awarded the Outstanding Clinical Endocrinologist Award for the year 2009 by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists.
Caterina Conte, MD, PhD, is a Professor of Internal Medicine at San Raffaele Roma University in Rome and the Head of the Obesity and Obesity-related Cardiometabolic Complications Research Unit at IRCCS MultiMedica in Milan, Italy. She earned her medical degree from Sapienza University in Rome, Italy, and completed her residency in Internal Medicine achieving board certification in 2012 at the same Institution. Her training includes a research fellowship at the Center for Human Nutrition, Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, under the mentorship of Professor Samuel Klein. She earned her PhD in Experimental Endocrine and Endocrine-Surgical Sciences from the Catholic University of Rome in 2016.
Dr David Strain is a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Exeter Medical School, with an expertise in microvascular structure and function. Clinically, he runs a community service for the older adult with diabetes and/or cardiovascular disease, and works as an in-patient consultant
His main focus is the health of older adults with diabetes; ensuring the right patient gets the right treatment. This includes research exploring the mechanism that some medications, specifically the SGLT-2 inhibitors and GLP-1 analogues, give benefits for people with diabetes, heart disease and renal failure beyond their effect on sugar and blood pressure. The hope is we can identify those who would benefit most before arising. He has performed the only study to date demonstrating the feasibility of individualizing targets for older adults across Europe. This has informed the new UK NICE guidance document.
Since April 2019, he has also been running a COVID service as clinical lead in COVID for Exeter, been involved in the national Long COVID taskforce, and establishing research into the underlying causes and potential cures.
Julia Mader is Full Professor of Medicine at Medical University of Graz and Deputy Head of the Diabetes Outpatient Clinic. She graduated at Medical University of Graz where she also trained in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology. She was Visiting Professor at the University Hospital of Bern, Switzerland (2016-2017). She leads the Diabetes Technology Research Unit at Medical University of Graz.
Mentored by Ralph A. DeFronzo in the 90s, Andrea Giaccari is currently Associate Professor of Endocrinology and a Senior Diabetologist. He is the Head of the Center for Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases of the Fondazione Policlinico Agostino Gemelli IRCCS, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (UCSC), the largest Italian hospital. He has a substantial track record as Principal Investigator in diabetes-focused clinical trials and has acted as senior adviser to the European Medicine Agency (EMA) for Diabetes. Andrea takes active part in stakeholder dialogue within the diabetes scientific community. He is a former member of the Executive Council of the Italian Diabetes Society and is at present Scientific Director of the Diabetes Research Foundation. He is also deeply involved in various social initiatives aimed at promoting Diabetes advocacy and knowledge in Italy, and has actively contributed to the creation of the “World Diabetes Day” in Italy. He serves as grant reviewer for many foundations, including the European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes and the European Commission (through the Innovative Medicines Initiative – JU). He served as Editor-in-Chief of the journal Nutrition Metabolism and Cardiovascular Disease from 2015 to 2018 and is presently an active member of the Editorial Board of the journals Diabetes Therapy and Acta Diabetologica. His primary scientific interests include diabetes pathogenesis, type 2 diabetes therapy, the efficacy and mechanisms of action of SGLT-2 inhibitors. In recognition of his contributions in the field, he was awarded the title of Best Italian Diabetes Scientist by the Italian Diabetes Society in 2021. At present, he is also the Head of the Italian Board for the National Guidelines on Type 2 Diabetes Therapy.
Shagun Bindlish MD FACP FOMA
Dr. Shagun Bindlish MD FACP FOMA, President Golden State Obesity Society, Scientific chair- ADA CLB Northern California. Dr. Bindlish is a global educator and speaker on diabetes, obesity, and lifestyle medicine. She is an Associate Editor for Obesity Pillars and Clinical Diabetes and currently chairs the Outreach Committee for the Obesity Medicine Association. She is serving as Scientific Chair for the American Diabetes Association – Northern California. She is the associate Editor for ADA's Clinical Diabetes Journal and Elsevier’s Obesity Pillars of Medicine journals. Dr. Shagun Bindlish is a board-certified Internal Medicine physician and Diabetologist with advanced training in metabolic disorders.
A passionate advocate for innovation in chronic disease care, Dr. Bindlish brings a multidisciplinary lens to advancing equitable, evidence-based treatment in both community and academic settings. Also, a collaborative educator with bariatric surgery societies to bridge medical and surgical care in obesity. She is the former speaker at BMJ’s Diabetes Course in India.
